PENNE meaning quill or pen, is similar to ziti. For penne the ends are cut on the diagonal, for ziti, they are straight cut.
This shape originated in Naples and is very popular in southern Italy. There are 3 lengths available: Penne – about 2 inches long, Mezze Penne – about 1 inch long and Pennette which is about 1/2 inch long or smaller.
Penne is popular because it can be used with any robust and flavorful ingredient, going well with fish, meat and vegetables. It is great for sauces, baking or serving chilled as a salad.
